Plan Your Shoot In Resolve

DaVinci Resolve is for post production, right? Now it's for PRE production too. Draw storyboard panels straight in the viewer - one clip is one panel, and the whole board is a timeline you can play back. Add your music, sound effects and voice over right where they'll live. Bosh!

The Big Idea

Your timeline is your storyboard

This makes total sense, right?! Panels are clips, the edit is the shot order, and the audio tracks are already exactly where they'll be in the finished film.

One clip is one panel

Drop MagicStoryboard on an adjustment clip, sketch the shot, move to the next. Your panel order is your clip order - re-cutting the board is just re-cutting the timeline.

Sound, on the board

Your music, sound effects and voice over go straight on the timeline underneath the panels. Play the board back and feel the pacing before you've shot a frame.

Render it out

Export every panel as an individual PNG or JPEG from the companion panel - or render the whole board as a video, timed to your temp audio.

Collaborate in the cloud

Everything lives in the clip's grade, so the board travels with the project and syncs through Blackmagic Cloud. Share it, and collaborate on your storyboard.

Drawing

Professional pen tools, right in the viewer

Sketch the shot on a paper card without leaving Resolve. GPU-native, so it stays live at 4K while you draw.

Four Pens

Pencil with real graphite texture and pressure, brush, a highlighter that multiplies so lines show through, and a proper eraser.

Pressure & Smoothing

Tablet pressure throughout, with a smoothing dial that takes the wobble out of your line on release.

31 Shapes

Full camera-move notation - pan, tilt, push in, pull out, zoom, dolly, crane, whip pan and friends - plus arrows, primitives, speech bubbles, trees and figures.

Shape Slots

Four slots on the toolbar, loadable from a picker and fired with Shift / Ctrl / Alt / Shift+Alt. Your go-to shapes, one modifier away.

One-Click Fill

Fill as a simple toggle on any shape - and always on for freehand custom shapes.

Three Inks Per Pen

Three inks on every pen. The colour wheel opens by clicking the ink you're on - pick, draw, done.

Layers & Animation

Boards that move

Simple animation controls - enough to sell a camera move or a gag, never so much that you're animating instead of planning.

Four Layers

Each with its own visibility, opacity and transform. Rough underneath, clean line on top - like a real light table.

Layer Transforms

Move, scale, rotate and flip whole layers - with a rotation pivot that stays put when you keep drawing.

Anims

Drag a ghost to say where a layer flies in from, with easing, zoom and spin. Start and end boxes are both draggable - and one button swaps them.

Onion Skin

See the previous panel underneath while you draw the next one. Simple animation between panels, the classic way.

The Card

Paper that feels like paper

Five paper stocks with real pulp, tooth and fibre - drawn under your ink, not pasted behind it. Or switch the paper off entirely and draw straight over the footage.

Cartridge

The classic. Real pulp and tooth.

Cold Press

Heavy watercolour texture.

Office Laser

Bright, smooth, printer-white.

Tracing

Translucent - overlay's best friend.

Laid

Ribbed fine-art finish.

Ratios & sizes

Canvas ratio and size presets for whatever you're shooting - plus borders around the card.

Guides

Thirds and grid guides, and an action-safe frame so your notes stay out of the picture.

Full overlay mode

Turn the background off and only your ink renders - draw blocking notes straight over your footage or previz.

Under the hood

CUDA + OpenCL

GPU-native with a multithreaded CPU fallback. Stays live at 4K while you draw.

Vectors, not pixels

Only stroke vectors cross the bus - never pixels - so a dense board stays fast.

Travels with the project

Everything lives in the clip's grade, so it syncs through Blackmagic Cloud with nothing to export.

Text & Reuse

Draw it once, use it everywhere

Boards are full of repeats - same character, same location, same label. MagicStoryboard makes the second time instant.

Real Textboxes

Multiline text with real system fonts, a typeface per textbox, word wrap and a draggable box. Scene numbers, dialogue, direction - type it, don't draw it.

Crisp At Any Size

MSDF rendering means text stays sharp at any resolution - from the timeline thumbnail to a 4K render.

Preset Library

A library on disk, filed by project. Save a character once, drop him into any board - same face in every panel.

Copy & Paste Layers

Layers travel via the system clipboard - across projects, across machines, and across restarts.

.sbl Files

Export and import .sbl files to share boards with collaborators or archive them alongside the project.

Companion Panel

Drive the whole board from one little window

A floating window on the Colour page that treats your timeline like a storyboard. Step between panels, add and duplicate them, rename the whole board in one click - and when you're done, export every panel in one go.

  • Step between panels - previous / next moves the playhead clip by clip.
  • Add & duplicate panels - new adjustment clip, paper ready, without touching the Edit page.
  • Rename the board - one click renames every panel in the sequence.
  • Export the lot - every panel as PNG or JPEG, named and numbered. Or render the timeline as a video with your temp audio.
